TechChain Talent is a specialist crypto and Web3 hiring partner. We have run searches for protocol teams, exchanges, infrastructure providers, and tokenization platforms across the UK, US, Switzerland, Poland, Ukraine, the UAE, and LATAM. The numbers in this report are anchored in three things.

Our own placement data.

A live dataset across funded crypto companies, 2024 through Q1 2026. Time to offer, offer to acceptance, decline reasons, retention at 6 and 12 months, source channel, compensation, and counter offers.

Public market activity.

Named funding rounds, named layoffs, named acquisitions. Cross referenced against PitchBook, CB Insights, RootData, DefiLlama and primary disclosures. If we cite a number, you can verify it.

Direct conversations.

Hundreds of founder and candidate calls every quarter. The qualitative read on what is actually happening behind the data.

Q1 2026 closed at roughly

, with deal count down sharply year on year and average check size up by a similar margin. Capital is concentrating into four buckets: stablecoin and payment rails, real world asset tokenization, regulated exchanges and prediction markets, and the AI agent stack.

Notable Raises, Q1 2026

Hiring is no longer concentrated in a handful of cities. Our placement data across 247 hires and 89 companies shows clear regional specialisations.

AI x Crypto engineering.

Agent infrastructure, ML for risk, onchain inference. +180% role growth YoY.

Stablecoin and payments.

Issuance, treasury, card programs, rails integration.

Institutional BD.

Sellers who can navigate Tier 1 procurement and speak fluently about custody, settlement, and tokenization.

Compliance and regulatory.

2.4x growth since MiCA enforcement.

Protocol security.

Smart contract auditors and security researchers at the frontier.

Supply has not caught up with demand in any of these. Comp is climbing across all five.

Banks, asset managers, and payment networks now have crypto product teams. The most contested institutional hires:

For the functions pulling away, qualified supply lags demand by a wide margin. The companies winning hires in 2026 are not the ones paying the most. They are the ones whose process respects a candidate's time and whose technical screen reflects the actual job.

Roughly 5,120 named industry layoffs across recent quarters. Read the earnings before you read the press release. AI is doing some of the work. Revenue compression is doing the rest.

Selected reductions

Coinbase · ~180

Kraken (Payward) · ~150

MARA Holdings · ~40

Four profiles, on the market right now, that we expect to be gone by Q4:

Senior protocol engineers

displaced by re-orgs at well known teams.

Compliance and legal leads

from exchanges that paused IPOs.

Mid to senior product and design leads.

Crypto natives who have shipped to large user bases.

Heads of function ready for a step up.

VPs at large exchanges considering a CXO seat at a Series B.

Ranges are senior base salary, fully loaded, USD equivalent. Token grants and performance bonuses excluded. Spread reflects geography, stage, and specialism. 25th to 75th percentile from our 2025 - Q1 2026 placement data.

The candidate is asking better questions than the hiring manager. Founders who treat candidate due diligence as an interview problem lose senior hires to founders who treat it as a sales problem.

Teams that score above three on all five hold their offers. Teams that score below three on two or more tend to lose finalists at the last minute.

Sharp, written, agreed by all stakeholders before sourcing starts.

Four stages or fewer. Calibrated. Decisions in 48 hours.

Token strategy.

Bands set per level before search starts. Vesting language pre drafted.

Comp benchmarking.

25th, 50th, 75th percentile known for the role in the candidate's market.

Retention investment.

First 90 days mapped. Onboarding plan, named buddy, scope clarity.

The infinite loop.

Five rounds over six weeks. Two of them with people who never see the candidate again. The candidate accepts a different offer in week three.

24 hour written feedback at every stage. Offer within 48 hours of the final loop. If you cannot move that fast, name the reason and set a date. Silence reads as disinterest, even when it is not.

By Q4 2026, every Series A and later crypto company will have a named Head of AI.

Stablecoin issuance will pull senior payments talent out of fintech at a rate we have not seen.

Prediction markets become a top three hiring category by deal count.

The TradFi to crypto C suite flow accelerates. The C suite hire is the inflection point.

The buying window closes by Q4. Senior crypto talent gets expensive again in 2027.

If you are hiring, let's talk.
